Buffett Warns of AI Deepfake Threat as Impersonations Surge
Warren Buffett, the legendary investor known as the 'Oracle of Omaha,' has issued a stark warning about the proliferation of AI-generated deepfake videos impersonating him. A fraudulent clip titled 'Warren Buffett: The #1 Investment Tip For Everyone Over 50' circulated with fabricated advice, prompting his company to denounce it as 'a spreading virus.'
The Berkshire Hathaway chairman emphasized that only one authentic 'Oracle of Omaha' exists. While the visual mimicry in such videos appears convincing, the company noted the audio often betrays its artificial nature with generic phrasing.
This incident reflects a broader trend of AI-enabled financial fraud. JPMorgan recently documented cases where criminals used synthetic media to impersonate executives during video calls, tricking victims into unauthorized fund transfers. The FBI has similarly warned about AI-generated voice scams targeting government employees.
